Unless someone comes up with an aftermarket ID unit that can be attached to your existing drone your ability to fly is going to be very, very limited. Based on what I've read without the necessary equipment to transmit identification the only places you will be able to fly are AMA airfields or other airspace set aside for FAA approved community based organizations (I believe they have to be 501C organizations). It will be interesting to see what develops but it sounds like we need to prepare for paying more for another drone in the coming years and/or flying less.

Are ALL maned flyings vehicles, e.g. microlights and hang gliders, in the USA subject to similar regulations?

It seems like someone could write an app for the smartphone that captures the necessary information and transmits it via cellular.

By now many have heard about the NPRM regarding proposed requirements for flying UAS in the U.S. There will be a number of communications classifications drones will have to meet in order to fly in most of the airspace in the U.S. The two we will most like be looking to fulfill are the called "Standard Remote Identification UAS" and "Limited Remote Identification UAS". Both of them require and internet connection and the ability to send identification information over the internet but the Standard RI UAS also provides for broadcasting this information from the drone to some receiving station (to be determined) with no internet link. If your equipment can fulfill the requirements of the Standard RI UAS you're allowed a greater range of flying options (primarily distance and BVLOS) even if you don't have an internet connection.

According to some on the DJI forum there are some DJI drones have this capability or could have it via a firmware update. I was curious if any of the Anafi experts on the forum know if the Anafi has this type of capability and/or if some type of firmware upgrade could enable it to broadcast this information. I'm not aware of the full details regarding the content of the information is required to be broadcast (drone serial number, gps location including altitude, etc.) at what power, frequency, etc. Of course the Anafi communicates with satellites (gps) and with the controller so there is some broadcast capability but if it could fulfill the requirements of these new rules without a hardware upgrade that would be much easier to incorporate.

Not sure if you have seen it but the FAA have proposed new rules for UAVs that will require remote transponders. This can have many consequences for drone pilots including additional costs and can really harm hobbyist and commercial drone usage. You can find more information and a link to give comments back to the FAA on the article below.

BenF, the link is not working but the proposed rule provides two ways of compliance. One is call "Standard Remote ID" and the other is "Limited Remote ID". Standard requires the drone to broadcast ID and flight information while limited requires the ground station to provided ID and flight information via the internet. Standard will allow flights of longer distance while Limited restricts flights to 400' from the ground station.
