These 4k files are huge, at the moment I run them through handbrake and 7zip them on ultra setting, is this most effective method of compressing these huge file sizes? what does everybody do with their files?

Personally I'm not a fan of compressing something when you can just store it ..... having paid for a great drone that films in 4k I prefer to keep all my videos as recorded. The cost of a 4TB (or even 8TB) external HD is nothing compared to the drone!
One thing I would say is that I'm quite selective in what I film. I don't have video on the whole time I'm flying. If you plan the shots and record only what you need you obviously end up with much less to store. I like having short (but full quality) videos available for editing and sometimes for showing to people.
