I've had my fingers nipped a couple times while hand landing so I don't use it anymore. Hand launch is OK. If I don't have the pad or a suitable landing surface (rare) I grab it out of the hover and tolerate the consequent crash event in the log.
Try moving your hand sideways slowly as soon as it had fully landed on it (the sensor is covered by your palm). No more issues since I'm doing that, and I don't see any use for a pad.
If poor GPS signal cause it to move up again or erratically, then just relaunch it and reposition it 50 cm or more higher than your hand, and press the button again.
